Flies

Flies are considered to be one of the most evolved insects known to man. They rely heavily on sight for survival and are generally extremely sensitive to movement.

Most fly species are more of a nuisance than a pest, however flies such as mosquitoes, which feed on blood, can also cause painful skin reactions when they bite and can also transmit infectious diseases.

Fly Species

There are an estimated 240,000 species of fly, with the common house fly regarded as being one of the most widely distributed animals on the planet. Of course, not all species are found within the UK, however some of the most common types of fly you may encounter are listed below.

Latin Name: Calliphora vomitoria

Appearance

Adult — 6–12mm in length; metallic blue color
Larva — Similar to the house fly larva in all respects except size. 18 mm when mature.

Lifecycle

Eggs hatch 0 – 18 hrs (partial development may occur within the female).
Larvae take 7 – 12 days to mature.

Habits

Breeds in mostly meat derived substances, sometimes cheese.
Common pest of dead rodents/birds etc.

Pest Control

We will carry out an assessment, we then use an insecticidal fogging treatment and insecticide smoke generators if necessary. This should be safe after 4-6 hours.

For re-occurring problems an electronic fly killing units can be used to provide a way of controlling them.

Cluster Flies

Cluster flies are common in Europe and the UK. They cluster and hibernate in numbers, in buildings. A single house, single building or row of similar buildings can be chosen year after year by cluster flies.

SIGNS OF A CLUSTER FLY PROBLEM:

During the winter these flies cluster in vast amounts in roof spaces and lofts, with several thousand flies clustered together.
If woken up early from their hibernation, they can be lazy and cause problems.
You may get two generations a year and sometimes up to 4 if the climate is really warm.
They are attracted to light and some will find their way into living areas.

WHAT DO THEY LOOK LIKE

Cluster flies are about 6 - 10mm long and slightly bigger than the house fly. They have a 10mm wingspan, a bristly yellow and black marked abdomen.

The female lays eggs in the soil near the burrows of earthworms to feed upon

IMPLICATIONS OF HAVING CLUSTER FLIES

They can be a nuisance.
Disease can be spread by flies landing on food, but cluster flies are less likely to be inside the house.

HOW DO WE GET RID OF CLUSTER FLIES?

Complete control of Cluster flies can be difficult as during hibernation, they are concealed in walls, attics and window frames.

We will carry out an assessment of the attic, to ensure there are no bats and water tanks are covered prior to treatment. We then use an insecticidal fogging treatment and insecticide smoke generators if necessary. This should be safe after 4-6 hours.

House Flies

LatinName: Musca domestica

Appearance

Adult — 5–8mm in length; thorax grey with 4 narrow stripes; abdomen buff or yellow; 4th wing vein bent and wing tips slightly pointed.
Larva — White and tapers to a point at the head end. 2 spiracle "spots" at the hind end. Legless. 12 mm long when mature.

Lifecycle

Eggs laid in batches of 120 to 150 and can hatch in 8 hrs or up to 3 days.
Larvae take 3 – 60 days to mature; pupae 3 – 28 days.

Habits

Found in almost all types of premises.
Breeds in moist decaying vegetable matter.
